THE DIAMOND EDIT

Understanding the details behind the sparkle.

A diamond is more than its brilliance.

The 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat — provide a common language for understanding and evaluating diamonds.

But beyond the terminology, choosing a diamond is about understanding how these characteristics come together to influence its appearance, character and value.

01 — CUT

The architecture of brilliance.

Cut refers to how well a diamond has been proportioned and finished — and it plays a significant role in how the diamond interacts with light.

A well-cut diamond can return light beautifully through its table and facets, creating the brightness, fire and scintillation we associate with a lively diamond.

Cut is not the same as shape.

Round, oval, pear and emerald are examples of diamond shapes, while cut refers to the quality of the diamond’s proportions and finish.

CUT IS HOW A DIAMOND HANDLES LIGHT.

02 — COLOUR

From colourless to character.

Diamond colour refers to the degree of colour visible in a diamond.

For traditional white diamonds, the commonly used grading scale ranges from D to Z, with D representing the highest colourless grade.

As you move down the scale, subtle warm tones become increasingly visible.

Colour preference is ultimately personal. A diamond doesn’t need to be completely colourless to be beautiful — its setting, shape and overall design can influence how its colour is perceived.

COLOUR IS THE HUE YOU SEE.

03 — CLARITY

The story within the stone.

Clarity refers to the presence of internal characteristics, known as inclusions, and external characteristics, known as blemishes.

Natural diamonds form deep within the earth under extraordinary conditions, and many carry tiny characteristics created during their formation.

Clarity is graded on a scale that ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I).

Importantly, clarity does not simply mean “how perfect” a diamond is. What matters is how those characteristics affect the stone’s appearance at normal viewing distances.

CLARITY IS WHAT MAKES A DIAMOND UNIQUE.

04 — CARAT

Weight, not size.

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, not its physical size.

One carat equals 0.20 grams.

Two diamonds of the same carat weight can appear different in size depending on their shape, proportions and cut.

This is why carat should always be considered alongside the other 4Cs rather than viewed on its own.

CARAT IS WEIGHT — NOT BEAUTY.
